Hemoglobin P(50) during a simulated ascent of Mt. Everest, Operation Everest II.

The amount of O(2) available to tissues is essentially the product of cardiac output, [Hb], and O(2) saturation. Saturation depends on P(O2) and the O(2)Hb dissociation curve. With altitude, increased [2,3-DPG] shifts the dissociation curve rightward, but hypocapnia and alkalosis move it leftward. We determined both standard and in vivo P(50) in 5 fit subjects decompressed over 42 days in an al...

Human responses to extreme altitudes.

It is a strange coincidence that the highest point on Earth is very close to the limit of human tolerance to hypoxia. The physiological changes that allow humans to reach these extreme altitudes involve enormous alterations of their normal state. It is useful to contrast this response with two others to high altitude. One is acclimatization that allows lowlanders to ascend to altitudes of up to...

Gas exchange at extreme altitude: results from the British 40th Anniversary Everest Expedition.

Since Messner and Habeler climbed to the summit of Mount Everest (8,848 m) without oxygen in 1978, there has been controversy between scientists trying to explain this feat. Field studies have suggested better respiratory performance than that found during a simulated climb in a hypobaric chamber, but the lack of data at extreme altitude has hampered the debate. We measured arterial oxygen satu...

Caudwell xtreme Everest expedition.

The Caudwell Xtreme Everest (CXE) expedition involved the detailed study of 222 subjects ascending to 5300 m or higher during the first half of 2007. Following baseline measurements at sea level, 198 trekker-subjects trekked to Everest Base Camp (EBC) following an identical ascent profile. An additional group of 24 investigator-subjects followed a similar ascent to EBC and remained there for th...

Hypoxic ventilatory response in successful extreme altitude climbers.

A very high ventilatory response to hypoxia is believed necessary to reach extreme altitude without oxygen. Alternatively, the excessive ventilation could be counterproductive by exhausting the ventilatory reserve early on. To test these alternatives, 11 elite climbers (2004 Everest-K2 Italian Expedition) were evaluated as follows: 1) at sea level, and 2) at 5,200 m, after 15 days of acclimatis...
